Mytilene

Mytilene is the capital and the main port of Lesvos, located on the eastern coast of the island, opposite the shores of Turkey. It is built amphitheatrically between seven beautiful verdant hills which end at the natural port. The town consists of old neighbourhoods and picturesque suburbs whereas the interesting structures and the archaeological monuments witness the rich heritage of the island.

The hottest season / summer is in June, July, August and September. The months of January, February, March, November and December have a high chance of precipitation. Mytilene has dry periods in June, July, August and September. The warmest month is August with an average maximum temperature of 32°C (89°F). The coldest month is January with an average maximum temperature of 12°C (53°F). December is the most wet month. August is the driest month.

As an ancient city, lying off the east coast, Mytilene was initially confined to a small island just offshore that later was joined to Lesbos, creating a north and south harbor. The early harbors of Mytilene were linked during ancient times by a channel 700 meters long and 30 meters wide. The Roman writer Longus speaks of white stone bridges linking the two sides. The boats that passed were six meters wide plus oars and had a depth of two meters.
The areas of the city that were densely populated connected the two bodies of land with marble bridges. They usually followed a curved line. The strait begins at the old market called Apano Skala. It was also close to Metropolis Street and ended at the Southern Harbor. One could argue that the channel transversed what is now called Ermou Street. Over time the strait began to collect silt and earth. There was also human intervention for the protection of the Castle of Mytilene. The strait eventually filled with earth.

Ermou street is full of life any day of the year and is a great attraction not only for tourists but locals from all over the island. The harbor is also full of shops, restaurants and bars. You must not miss the Museum of Theophilos and the Teriad Museum, both in the area of Varia, towards the airport. The area is full of beautiful mansions from the 19th and 20th century. The Castle and the Ancient Theatre, the Archaeological Museum, the Yeni Mosque, the old Ottoman Baths, the Dome of Agios Therapon, the old market with the antique shops and the new of course where you can find almost anything.
