On the most western part of Lesvos lies a piece of paradise, a natural cove with wild beauty called Gavatha.
Upon seeing Gavatha for the first time one is welcomed along a long soft fine sandy beach. Located in a natural bay with a small islet across its shores called Megalonisi, Gavatha is a picture perfect village. The village has a few houses, taverns, mini markets and a cafeteria. It has a small harbour where most locals are engaged in fishing. The white cycladic style church surrounded by the Aegean Sea is the main attraction of Gavathas. Its warm water is considered one of the best beaches for children as its waters are shallow with fine soft sand.

Other nearby villages are Sigri and Skala Eresos, the most famous summer destination in the western part of Lesvos. In Sigri there is the largest petrified forest in the world, more than 25 million years old, and is a 15-minute drive from Gavatha. Here you can visit the Natural History Museum of the Lesvos Petrified Forest, where you can see huge Sequoia trees, which are found only in North America today. Also, there is a new harbor with a ferry connection to the mainland of Greece. The vibrant Skala Eresos is a 30-minute drive and it has an endless sandy beach full of bars, cafes, and taverns all on the beach.
