Molyvos, also known as Mythimna, is one of the most beautiful medieval villages in Lesvos situated in the North, 60 km from Mytilene, the capital of the island. Molyvos is a traditional preserved settlement attracting thousands of visitors with its natural beauty and picturesque corners. Narrow alleys winding around the traditional stone built houses, the Turkish style fountains and beautiful mansions compose an idyllic setting.
The Castle of Molyvos (or Mythimna) was probably constructed in the mid 13th century and it was renovated in 1373 by the Genovese Frangisk I Guateluzo. However, it also went under reformations by the Turks in 1462, so it is evident that the architectural style went under many changes. Molyvos is also known as the birthplace of Arion, the first guitar player in written history, and favourite spot for poets, painters and intellectuals all around the world.
