About Antissa
The town of Antissa sits on the side of a mountain and is the regional center for the villages of Vatousa, Xidera, Gavatha, Liota, Rema, Zithra and Pterounda.
It is located on the west side of Lesvos, 76 km's from Mitilini (Capital).
This area has great historical importance for Lesvos, the ancient town flourished here and was one of the first wind settlements of the island. The art of music was highly developed in this area. According to mythology waves washed the head and lyre of Orpheus, who was murdered by Maenads at the beach of Antissa. At the bottom of the sea are the ancient ruins of the city which was destroyed by the Romans.
Antissa is the second most important village of the area and motherland of the ancient poet and musician Terpandros.
There is a large and beautiful square with very old Plane trees resting beautifully among the Greek coffee shops, tavernas, cafe-bars and post office. If you need shelter in the hot dry summer days Antissa square is a natural air conditioner.

Antissa is 6km's from the beach of Kambos and 8km's from Gavatha. Gavatha's beach is ideal for swimming and water sports. Its warm waters are shallow with fine sand perfect for young children to play in. Gavatha and Kambos beach are ideal for wind / kite surfers. A motorbike sand dune tournament is held here every year.
Ancient Antissa has a shallow beach with pebbles. A quiet beach with few visitors. The
waters are crystal clear. The whole coast line is rich in fish for the fishing enthusiasts.
Overview of Digital Museum George Iakovidis
The first fully digital museum in Greece exhibits the renowned painter’s work via display and interaction digital systems. It is located at his birthplace, Hidira. Hidira is 10 km's from Antissa.
It is located in the village Chidira, the birthplace of the great painter, and has been a place where for a period of three constant years, technology meets art in an ideal way, being actually the first entirely digital art museum in Greece.
The purpose of the museum is the emergence of life and work of George Iacovidis, by exploiting new technologies in the art pieces on display which have the form of digital reproductions. If you visit the Digital Museum you will have the opportunity to admire the work and career of the artist, through an original interactive way, giving you a great visual experience.
This pioneering art place, has been created with the initiative and offer of the “Educational and Cultural Foundation, Nikolaos G. Papadimitriou”. The museum attracts visitors not only from all over the island, but also tourists, offering the local community of Chidira a very intense cultural life.
Another site worthseeing not far away from Antissa, there is the Perivolis Monastery, built in the beginning of the 17th century and decorated with remarkable Byzantine wall paintings.
